Background

Early this summer while attending the Edmond’s Sketcher Fest, I heard author, Amy Stewart speak about becoming a “self-appointed artist in residency.” It sums up to the philosophy of “just do it.”

A few years ago, I had put on my bucket list to do an artist in residency. Somewhere. Sometime in the future. The reality is that most of the official residencies are at least a month long and require applications. As an American slob who works, I don’t have a month to devote, nor do I have the brain power to do an application. Not to mention my fragile ego could not withstand the rejections.

So with her encouragement, I decided to dedicate my time on the Pacific Northwest as my office 2026 Residency.

Pacific Northwest Summer Residency – 2026

My wife and I like to escape the hot summers of Austin, TX. And this year was an opportune time NOT to be in Texas. Between visiting friends, joining in on Portland’s Bike Summers, attending the Sketcher Fest, and doing a few dog sits, we got the opportunity to take in many aspects of the PNW. Below I’ve organized the resulting body of work by location.
