This week I met up with Urban Sketchers – Bend at Riley Nature Preserve. Going into it, I knew that I have struggled with expansive landscapes. My goal was to find something to keep my eyes focused.

Our time was limited to just two hours. But after some chit chat, we were down to one hour and 30 minutes. I narrowed on this walkway to give me a focal point and foundation for perspective.

I also started the practice of drawing two versions since I tend to screw up something early. In the image above, I didn’t get the perspective right with the railing and shadows on the boardwalk. Thankfully in the second version, I was able to correct that by slowing down and using a smaller, dryer brush.

Throw down on Wednesday’s meetup at Riley Ranch Natural Reserve
In the throw down, we discussed our sketches. It was also refreshing to talk about our weaknesses and how we are trying to improve our approaches.
